I used to enjoy Maki-San when they first opened at Dhoby Ghaut—it was a go-to spot with long queues, which spoke to its popularity. However, over time, I feel their standards have dropped significantly.
I recently purchased a DIY Mega San ($13.75), along with popcorn chicken and a drink, and I was thoroughly disappointed. The sushi had an overwhelming amount of rice but was severely lacking in actual ingredients. I could barely see any protein, and the beef I ordered was almost non-existent. It felt like I was just eating plain rice with a few scattered toppings.
The popcorn chicken was another letdown—mostly flour and batter, with very little actual meat. Overall, the meal was not worth the price, and the quality has diminished compared to their early days.
To put things into perspective, I also bought a kimbap from a Korean store, and it was far more filling and satisfying than Maki-San’s sushi. It’s disappointing to see a brand that once had great quality and loyal customers lose its touch.
Would I return? Probably not. At this price point, I’d expect better portions and quality.

For a $16 bowl, this was totally not worth it. Toppings selected were soo pathetic in portion. Tamago egg? 4 small pieces. Chicken? 4 small slices. Smoked salmon protein? 2 slices given. I was truly appalled by the portion. Will not come back again unless they rectify this.

I absolutely LOVE MAKISAN. In terms of healthy option of salad where I wanna control my daily calories. It competes with Subway for variety of ingredients and pricing!!! They also have very quirky music which give it a certain vibe. I brought my brother here and he loves it as well

The sushi meal was customisable and had a big portion, but for $19.38, it didn’t feel worth the price—especially since it didn’t include enoki mushroom snacks or miso soup. The food was decent, but I expected more for the cost.

Went to compass one outlet 2 days straight, verdict ; vegs for both days are yellowish & some black at the tips. Tried their roasted striploin(beef) today likely turned bad, it smells sour & tasted weird. Other than that all is fine, avocado from this outlet comes in mini cubes unlike the usual paste type which was a good thing just that it was frozen like icecube frozen on day 1 & day 2 was room temp. Likely ran out and got a new batch portion from the freezer. Overall 2/5

It's good that the people taking care of the food are wearing a mask. But, they (or their hands) keep nudging the sushi box that makes it touch the food. So, please be careful with that.

As a vegetarian, I thought to give it a try as I passby this place every day. Won't visit again after today's experience - the staff agreed to replace the nonveg item with a veg but instructed to remove the additional veg by the supervisor/manager I guess. How much a piece of vege will cost? Imagine all this was done in front of me. Btw congrats, you saved a piece of meat.
